Many Ethiopian Teens Dying from Illegal Abortions

(WOMENSENEWS)--More women in Ethiopia die from complications from illegal abortions than from any other medical reason save tuberculosis, the World Health Organization reported this week.

About 70 percent of women brought to hospitals after suffering complications from illegal abortions die, according to the international health group. Out of 100,000 women who have back street abortions in Ethiopia, 1,209 die, mostly women 16 through 20, the Integrated Regional Information Networks news service of the United Nations reported.

In the United States, 1 woman in 100,000 dies from complications after legal abortions, and 50 per 100,000 die after complications following illegal abortions. In developing countries, the death rate from legal abortion is between 4 and 6 per 100,000 and for illegal abortions the death rate is between 100 and 1,000 per 100,000, according to the World Health Organization.

Abortion is illegal in almost all circumstances in Ethiopia and back street abortions are common.
